If you have the good fortune to be traveling in Europe this year, be sure to visit that “city of musicians,” Vienna. Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Schoenberg, Mahler, and other giants of the Western Art music world all congregated in this Austrian city, which still boasts a vibrant classical music environment. From the government-subsidized Staatsoper (with tickets as low as a few Euros, if you’re willing to stand) to the extensive Haus der Musik (a museum that contains not only music artifacts of the past but also experiments in sound technology as well as interactive opportunities to “conduct” a virtual orchestra), Vienna has enough to keep even the most avid music tourist occupied for days. Some of the world’s top musical groups, notably the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna Boys’ Choir, make their home in Vienna. Concert performances are plentiful year round, but since performance schedules slow down significantly in July and August, be sure to plan your visit accordingly. Traveling can foster new discoveries: what are your favorite haunts for enjoying or learning about music? What are some of your favorite traveling memories that involve classical music? Do you have any recommendations for vacationers? The location does not need to be in Vienna, but can be anywhere.

A favorite traveling memory that involves classical music: Whilst I was studying in Glasgow I went to hear a symphony performance, and on the program was a piece by Aaron Copeland. As they began, I was struck by the utter American-ness of the music, in contrast to the Mendelsohn we'd just been listening to. Hearing Copeland performed in Glasgow helped me feel the contrast between European and American classical music.
